WA: Public consultation begins shortly for WA’s strata reforms

Lands Minister John Carey has announced public consultation will open on 1 October 2024 on Landgate’s five-year review of the Strata Titles Act 1985.

• Five-year review of Western Australia’s strata law announced by State Government
• Two phases of public consultation will inform the review
• The first consultation will run between 1-31 October 2024

The review will explore strata manager practices and standards, how to improve cost controls in strata schemes, alongside other opportunities to enhance strata living. It aims to expand the wide-ranging legislative improvements that started in 2020 to make strata clearer and fairer for WA strata owners, residents, and industry professionals.

Lands Minister John Carey said, “”The State Government is now investigating the next layer of legislative change required to further enhance strata living for WA’s growing number of strata owners and residents.”

WA has almost 340,000 strata properties with an estimated quarter of WA’s population living in strata communities.

Strata titles include residential properties such as apartments, townhouses and units, as well as retail, commercial and industrial premises, and increasingly mixed-use developments.

The review will be used to identify any solutions that directly benefit strata owners and residents. A second phase of consultation will follow in early 2025.

“The two phases of public consultation built into this review will ensure Western Australians are offered meaningful opportunities to contribute feedback and help shape the Government’s upcoming strata reform priorities,” states John Carey.
