NSW: REINSW opens Helpline to everyone in strata management industry

REINSW Helpline

This article discusses how REINSW has opened up its Helpline to everyone in the strata management industry.

With the strata management sector set for a shake-up amid allegations of conflicts of interests, insurance rorts and inappropriate use of apartment owners’ funds, the REINSW is being flooded with calls from concerned strata managers wanting to ensure they’re discharging their responsibilities correctly.

In response, the REINSW has opened up its Helpline (usually member-only) to everyone in the strata management industry to ensure support and advice is available to anyone who needs it.

The REINSW Helpline is typically only available to members however given the circumstances, it is currently available to non-REINSW members as well.

REINSW CEO Tim McKibbin says strata law can be complex, so making professional advice and guidance freely available to everyone in the industry is in line with the Institute’s commitment to raise professional standards.

“As a service to those in the strata industry and consumers, we’re encouraging strata managers to review their management agreements to ensure they are meeting all necessary obligations in terms of transparency and disclosure, and if they have any questions or concerns, to get in touch,” Mr McKibbin says.

In response to calls for assistance, the REINSW delivered a webinar discussing strata managers’ obligations, particularly disclosure and consent. That webinar was recorded and is available on the REINSW website.

“There are a number of ways in which REINSW can help. For instance, we have developed agency agreements which walk both the consumer and the managing agent through the formation of the strata management relationship in the simplest of terms. This is the basis for respectful, mutually beneficial and, crucially, completely compliant relationships being established from the outset,” Mr McKibbin says.

“Additionally, we can offer strata managers access to professional advice in relation to their insurance-related questions, to protect them as well as the customers they serve.

“The spotlight on the strata management sector is only set to intensify and it is unfortunate when the alleged unethical behaviour of a few operators tarnishes the reputation of the people doing great work on behalf of their clients. For those people, the REINSW is ready and willing to help,” Mr McKibbin says.
